The Last Spartans

Just off the painting table is another unit of Spartans — this will be my last, at least for a while.

I am imagining this unit as Perioikoi (free non-Citizens) and to that end I painted them with black lambdas on their shields to differentiate them from the Spartiate units which I have painted all in red and bronze. There is no evidence this was the case but it does help to distinguish different units on the table top.

This now brings my Spartan Hoplites for Alala! up to 4 units: 2 Spartiates with red lambdas, the recently completed Perioikoi, and also a unit of Skiritai (lightly equipped non-citizens).

Here are the  Skiritai fighting Athenians at the recently played Pylos game.

As the Spartans were relatively few in number I do not need any more for Alala! games. A larger army can be made up with allies being added to the four-unit core.
